2008 Get Outdoors Proclamation

 
Governor Sonny Perdue announced the GO Georgia program on Monday, June 2 at Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah, and declared by proclamation that June is “Georgia Great Outdoors Month.” The new initiative, which is supported by the Friends of Georgia State Parks includes several elements including: special events and activities throughout the state park system; the GO Georgia Web site; the introduction of a Library Loan ParkPass Program to make admission to state parks and historic sites accessible through every local public library; and the introduction of the Get Outdoors Georgia Gopher, an easily identifiable mascot.

A PROCLAMATION
GEORGIA GREAT GET OUTDOORS MONTH

WHEREAS
  The Georgia Department of Natural Resources during the month of June 2008 is launching Get Outdoors Georgia, a statewide, on-going initiative to foster and encourage an interest in health awareness, fitness and the outdoors; and
     
WHEREAS
  The mission of the Get Outdoors Georgia initiative focuses on recreation that highlights the link between participating in outdoor recreation and improved health for people of all ages and abilities; an effort to decrease obesity; and an emphasis on children’s early involvement in nature to establish life-long physical, mental and community benefits; and
     
WHEREAS
 

It is essential to protect and preserve our natural environment and outdoor recreational resources and to this end Georgia’s Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan for 2008-2013, a significant policy document that directs the future of outdoor recreation in Georgia over the next five years includes strategic priorities to:

  • Promote fitness and livability of all Georgia communities
  • Enhance Georgia's economic vitality through the social, environmental and economic benefits of outdoor recreation,
Address the need for conservation and proper use of Georgia’s natural resources; and
     
WHEREAS
  June is “National Great Outdoors Month” and also occurring in June are other outdoor recreation annual events such as National Trails Day, National Boating and Fishing Week, National Family Recreation Week, and National Clean Beaches Week; now
     
THEREFORE
  I, SONNY PERDUE, Governor of the State of Georgia do hereby proclaim June 2008 and each subsequent June as Georgia Great Outdoors Month.
