    ATLANTA, GA (September 28, 2009) – Autumn’s arrival means multicolored leaves crunching beneath your hiking boots and gooey s’mores sticking to your chin. Few things say “fall” as much as a well deserved getaway, complete with energizing hikes and cozy campfires. To help leaf peepers plan their autumn escapes, Georgia’s state parks will soon launch “Leaf Watch 2009” to track fall color as it moves across the state.
    ATLANTA, GA, August 31, 2009 ~~ Put away your wallet and pull out your fishing pole or hiking boots. Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites is offering free admission on Saturday, September 26 as part of National Public Lands Day. The statewide celebration is a way to thank park visitors and volunteers for their support of outdoor recreation and historic preservation.
    ATLANTA, August 19, 2009 – Georgia State Parks invite guests to enjoy a vacation in lodges with a new, lower “Lodge-ical” rate that starts at $69 per night. Guests can experience an affordable overnight escape for as little as $69 at George T. Bagby State Park on Lake Walter F. George, Little Ocmulgee State Park in McRae and Red Top Mountain State Park on Lake Allatoona. A new Lodge-ical rate of $79 is now available at Amicalola Falls State Park near Dawsonville and Unicoi State Park near Helen. Guests can call 1-800-864-PARK (7275) to book their vacations with the new Lodge-ical rate.

    ATLANTA, May 27, 2009 ~~ The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced a restructuring of state parks and historic sites as a result of a nearly 39% reduction in state appropriations and 24% projected loss of revenue.
    ATLANTA (May 18, 2009) – Each March through May, people nationwide volunteer their time to collect trash and beautify their communities’ thoroughfares, parks and waterways during the Great American Cleanup. This year, Georgia has joined an elite group of states that can boast 100 percent participation from their counties. In 2008, only Tennessee achieved the perfect participation status.
    ATLANTA, April 29, 2009 – The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Board has approved an adjustment to parking fees at state parks. The daily parking fee will increase from $3 to $5 per vehicle (12 passenger or less) and the annual pass will increase from $30 to $50, effective May 20, 2009. Discounts are available for seniors age 62 and older, active duty military and veterans. ParkPass was introduced in 1992. This is the second increase in the 17-year existence of the program.
    ATLANTA, April 30, 2009 ~~ Ten swimming pools at Georgia’s State Parks will not open this summer. The suspension of these facilities is necessary due to a lack of funds to make the repairs needed to comply with new federal regulations that mandate specific pool drain and cover standards.
    ATLANTA, APRIL 13, 2009 ~~ Beginning April 13, Georgia Public Broadcasting will air an American Experience series called "We Shall Remain," telling the story of Native Americans in the United States. Episode 3 is about the infamous Trail of Tears, with portions filmed at New Echota and Chief Vann House state historic sites. The series airs Mondays, April 13 - May 11, at 9 p.m. on your local GPB channel.
    ATLANTA, April 16, 2009 – Just in time for sleeping-under-the-stars season, Georgia’s State Parks are offering a chance to make outdoor getaways even more exciting. Between April 18 and May 25, state park visitors who spend a night in a lodge room, cottage, campground or yurt are automatically entered for a chance to win a Coachmen travel trailer from Mid State RV Center in Byron or camping gear from outdoor specialty store REI.

    ATLANTA, March 26, 2009 - Georgia has a long state park legacy…the longest in fact. From Indian Springs, thought to be the oldest state park in the nation, to F.D. Roosevelt, the state’s largest park and one that contains the former president’s favorite picnic spot, Georgia’s beautiful topography and rich history are brought together in her state parks.
    ATLANTA, March 25, 2009 – The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has proposed adjusting parking fees at state parks. A public hearing is set for April 6 in Atlanta, and public comments will be accepted through April 24. The DNR board will vote on the proposed increase at its next meeting on April 29.
    ATLANTA, March 11, 2009 ~~ The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently awarded more than $1.3 million in Recreational Trails Program grants to 16 government agencies across Georgia. The grants will assist with the construction and maintenance of trails and trailheads throughout the state. Funding for the program comes from the Federal Highway Administration.
    ATLANTA, GA (December 8, 2008) – Camp Twin Lakes (CTL), in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), has signed an agreement to renovate and operate Camp Will-A-Way, located at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Georgia.
    ATLANTA, February 9, 2009 ~~ Georgia’s State Park System has unveiled a new club just for canoe and kayak enthusiasts. The Park Paddlers Club includes six state parks with waterways ranging from tidal rivers to the celebrated Okefenokee Swamp. Members can earn a bragging-rights t-shirt by paddling all 22 miles at Crooked River, George L. Smith, Magnolia Springs, Reed Bingham, Stephen C. Foster and Sweetwater Creek state parks.

    ATLANTA, February 4, 2009 ~~ While dogwoods and daffodils are the traditional trumpeters of spring, a host of wildflowers are arriving in celebration of warmer weather. For a close-up look at these brilliant blooms, join state park rangers on a series of guided wildlflower walks across Georgia. Hikers will look for wood violet, trout lily, wild azalea, spring-beauty, showy orchis, foam flower, trillium, Indian pink, buckeye and many more native blooms. These programs are hosted by several state parks that have a large number of native plants growing in natural settings.

    RESACA, GA, October 28, 2008 ~~ In anticipation of the American Civil War’s sesquicentennial (2011-2015), the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has broken ground on the future Resaca Battlefield State Historic Site in Gordon County. During an October 27 ceremony, Civil War re-enactors fired musketry on the site for the first time in 144 years.
    ATLANTA, December 11, 2008 -- The Georgia Forestry Commission and Georgia State Parks are sounding the alarm on a camping activity that can cause serious damage to our forests. Campers and park visitors are being asked to not bring any firewood into parks or other natural sites because of the danger of transporting destructive foreign pests.
    ATLANTA, December 24, 2008 ~~ Georgia’s state parks and historic sites are implementing their annual fee increases effective January 1, 2009. Modest increases, as well as standardization of rates for campsites, cottages, picnic shelters, museums, swimming pools and other amenities, will help generate revenues to offset budget reductions. Current rates on reservations made before January will still be honored.
    (MCDONOUGH, GA, January 7, 2009) ~~ When Bill Fowler moved from Michigan to McDonough last March, he found a creative and healthy way to explore his new state. Fowler grabbed his bike, donned his helmet and joined Georgia State Park system’s Muddy Spokes Club. The year-old club challenges riders to complete 69 miles at 11 state parks. Successful members get a “mud-splattered” t-shirt and bragging rights.
    ACWORTH, GA., July 10, 2008 ~~ Three Acworth residents are the first bicyclers to complete the Muddy Spokes Club challenge from Georgia’s state park system. Scott Davis, daughter Christina and friend Kirubakaran (Karan) Selvaraj earned t-shirts exclaiming “I made it 68 muddy miles” for completing trails at 11 state parks across Georgia.
    ADAIRSVILLE, GA., September 4, 2008 ~~ Robert “Dud” and Tina Barton of Adairsville are the first state park fans to complete both the Canyon Climbers Club and the Muddy Spokes Club challenges. The couple earned bragging rights t-shirts and the pride of knowing they are the first to complete both quests ~~ and only the second group to finish the state’s mountain biking pursuit.

    June 26, 2008 ~~ The much-anticipated re-opening of Brazell’s Creek Golf Course in Reidsville is scheduled for July 15. The state park will now feature a full-length 18-hole golf course. Georgia’s famed golf course architect, Denis Griffiths has designed an entirely new and challenging layout for the southeast Georgia locale.

    June 16, 2008 ~~ In an effort to continue to provide customers with the best golfing experience around, the Georgia State Park Golf Courses announced today that golfers are now able to book tee times in advance via the internet. The service is designed to accommodate the increasing demand for 24/7 access to golf reservations by golfers.
    ATLANTA, June 5, 2008 – Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites is launching Get Outdoors Georgia (GO Georgia) a new multi-year initiative to help every Georgian rediscover the great outdoors. GO Georgia kicks off next weekend with a Free Day in the Parks on Saturday, June 14. Admission to all of Georgia’s 63 state parks and historic sites will be free for every visitor. The new initiative invites visitors, especially families and children, to take part in family-friendly, nature-based outdoor recreation in the beautiful surroundings of Georgia’s state parks and historic sites.

    ATLANTA, May 21, 2008 – Google Inc. has joined the Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as a founding sponsor of the “Get Outdoors Georgia” campaign (GO Georgia) in an effort to help Georgians get outdoors, get fit and enjoy their diverse natural resources. The multi-year initiative, planned by Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites, focuses on family-friendly, nature-based, healthy outdoor recreation throughout the state. Google will provide strategic resources, a suite of services and support that will dramatically improve the overall Web site capabilities and expand the scope of the GO Georgia campaign.
    ATLANTA, May 28, 2008 – Georgia’s public libraries and Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites are making it easier than ever for patrons to “Get Out. Get Dirty. Get Fit.” in the state’s great outdoors. In advance of the June launch of the “Get Outdoors Georgia” (GO Georgia) campaign, a valid library card now allows any patron to borrow a Georgia State Park “ParkPass” and Historic Site pass from their local libraries. The passes are good for free parking or admission at any of the 63 parks and historic sites statewide.
    Pine Mountain, Ga., March 11, 2008 ~~ During February, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) held a prescribed burn in a small section of F.D. Roosevelt State Park. While the burn has caused controversy with some members of the Pine Mountain Trail Association, biologist believe they are making the best decision for long-term care of the park’s rare ecosystem.

    COVINGTON, GA, January 16, 2008 ~~ Just days after the search for a missing hiker in north Georgia, the Department of Natural Resources hosted the state’s annual Search & Rescue (SAR) Conference where safety personnel train for such incidences.
    Atlanta, GA (December 2007) ~~ Restored Forestland at Panola Mountain State Park Will Address Climate Change, Create New Wildlife Habitat and Preserve Water near Metro Atlanta
    ATLANTA, November 29, 2007 – Break out your bicycle, helmet and stain-busting laundry detergent. Georgia State Park System’s new Muddy Spokes Club challenges mountain bikers and casual cyclists to tackle 11 state parks and 68 miles of trails. The club is designed to get Georgians outside and moving, encouraging them to think of state parks as places to exercise while enjoying beautiful scenery.
    WILKINSON COUNTY, November 30, 2007 ~~ The Georgia Department of Natural Resources recently accepted a donation of 537 acres along the Oconee River in Wilkinson County. Balls Ferry Historical Park Association made the donation on behalf of Plum Creek Timber Company. A public ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on December 7.
    Appling, Ga., November 15, 2007 – Mistletoe State Park on Clarks Hill Lake will close for three days while quota hunts are conducted for wildlife management purposes. On December 4, 5 and 6, all park amenities, trails, boat ramps and accommodations will be closed to public use. The park will re-open at 7 a.m. on Friday, December 7. The quota hunts were planned during the week to minimize visitor impact.
    ATLANTA, Ga. (September 28, 2007) – Officials with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), State Parks & Historic Sites Division have decided to settle questions about property issues around the lake at High Falls State Park through boundary line dispute agreements.
    ATLANTA, November 16, 2007 ~~ The Board of Natural Resources voted recently to accept 2,268 acres in northeast Georgia donated by Georgia Power. Located in Habersham and Rabun counties, the property will assure preservation of land around Tallulah Gorge State Park. Since 1995, the state has leased the land through a partnership with Georgia Power and the North Georgia Mountains Authority.
    CARTERSVILLE, September 18, 2007 – One of the most historically significant battlefields in Georgia will soon be leased by Red Top Mountain State Park and opened for more programs. To celebrate the acquisition, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours and Civil War enactments are scheduled for the weekend of October 6 – 7.

    September 4, 2007 ~~ Coastal Georgia boasts Champions in both Boys and Girls 15-17 age groups, the most competitive of all the categories. Shiloh Snow of Blackshear and Victoria Bennett of Patterson became the first Champions of the Georgia Junior Golf Tour at The Creek at Hard Labor in Rutledge this past weekend. The juniors played 18 holes each day for three days on the challenging state park course located between Madison and Covington.
    ATLANTA, August 29, 2007 – Governor Sonny Perdue today accepted the donation of two solar-powered vehicles from BP America. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will use these vehicles at Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs and Roosevelt’s Little White House Historic Site in Warm Springs.

Additionally, the number of deer-car collisions in the park dropped from nearly 40 in one year to just three this past year.

    ATLANTA, March 18, 2005 -- The green treefrog may have stolen the media spotlight in its quest to become Georgia’s state amphibian, but the gopher tortoise will soon celebrate its 16th year as Georgia’s state reptile. On March 30, 1989, the gopher tortoise was recognized for its contributions to the ecological balance of Georgia’s coastal plain.

    The DNR’s Division of State Parks & Historic Sites is committed to using environmentally sound construction practices and is working with the U.S. Green Building Council to secure LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification for many new facilities.

    1/19/2005 -- Since opening last April in Warm Springs, Ga., the new President Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Museum at the Little White House Historic Site has been acclaimed for its environmentally responsible construction, its outstanding educational programs and its feature film.
    December 2004 ~~ The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) hosted a public meeting in Covington on Tuesday, Dec. 14 to announce the deer management plan for three Georgia state parks: Hard Labor Creek in Rutledge, Red Top Mountain in Cartersville and Richard B. Russell in Elberton.
    December 2004 ~~ Highland Walk Golf Course at Victoria Bryant State Park in Royston, Ga., has established a new site for LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, the only national initiative designed specifically for girls.
    July 2004 ~~ The highly anticipated Arrowhead Pointe at Richard B. Russell State Park in Elberton will open July 29. The 18-hole championship golf course has been in the works for several years and the course is in optimum condition for a late July opening.
    May 20, 2004, Fargo, Ga. -- With the opening of the state’s new $2 million Suwannee River Visitor Center, visitors learn not only about alligators and cypress trees, but also how buildings can be made from recycled car parts and plastics.
    May 2004 - Park guests may make park reservations 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the Internet or by phone at more "customer-friendly" times (8 a.m. - 8 p.m. during the week and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends).

    The Georgia Department of Natural Resources recently purchased 156 acres in Rockdale County, increasing the size of Panola Mountain State Park to 915 acres.
    2002 ~~ F.D. Roosevelt State Park in Pine Mountain is launching a fund-raising campaign to place a bronze statue of F.D. Roosevelt atop Dowdell’s Knob, the president’s favorite picnic spot when he visited Georgia in the 1930s and ‘40s.

    Recent fires within the Okefenokee Swamp have prompted officials to temporarily close S.C. Foster State Park near Fargo. Visitors are advised to call ahead before visiting S.C. Foster State Park in the near future.
    2003 ~~ In 1970, 35,000 onlookers watched in awe as aerialist Karl Wallenda crossed Tallulah Gorge on a wire cable. At the time, it was the highest, longest and most dangerous such act attempted. On May 4, onlookers gatherer again to cross the gorge themselves, this time on a new cable suspension bridge swaying 80 feet above the gorge floor.
    On Sunday, March 17, 2002, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources broke ground for the new Okefenokee State Park in Fargo. The public ceremony began at 1:30 p.m. at the boat ramp north of the Suwannee River bridge on Hwy. 441.
